The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has announced the opening of registration for Phase Two of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), inviting young Ghanaians to pursue careers in the technology sector.

Prospective applicants are required to register via the programme’s official portal as the government intensifies efforts to equip one million citizens with coding and digital skills for the global digital economy.

The Ministry clarified that applicants who took part in the pilot or Phase One but were not selected do not need to submit fresh applications. Instead, they can log into their existing accounts using their previous credentials and select their preferred courses once the portal becomes active.

Background to the programme

The One Million Coders Programme was launched nearly a year ago by John Dramani Mahama at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT. The initiative began with a pilot phase targeting 500 trainees across four centres in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani and Tamale.

However, strong public interest led to a surge in applications, with close to 94,000 submissions recorded within 48 hours. This prompted authorities to expand the pilot to accommodate approximately 1,000 participants.

Under Phase One, the programme has been rolled out across 130 learning centres in all 16 regions, each equipped with 50 customised laptops configured for coding instruction.

Institutional collaboration and expansion

The implementation of the programme is being carried out in partnership with key institutions, including the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, Ghana Digital Centres Limited and the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT.

Twelve tertiary institutions are also participating in the first phase, among them the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Cape Coast.

To strengthen delivery, the government has recruited 130 constituency-level coordinators to manage the centres and provide technical support for trainees. Plans are underway to expand the initiative to cover all constituencies nationwide.

The Ministry has encouraged eligible applicants to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that further details on course offerings and timelines will be published on the OMCP portal.
